Frequently Asked Questions

What's a good tip percentage?

In the United States, 15-20% is considered standard for sit-down restaurants. 18% is the most common default. For exceptional service, 25% or more is appropriate. For counter service or takeout, 10-15% is typical.

How to calculate a 20% tip?

To calculate a 20% tip, multiply the bill by 0.20. A quick shortcut: move the decimal point one place left (that gives 10%), then double it. For example, on a $65 bill: 10% = $6.50, so 20% = $13.00.

Do you tip on tax?

Etiquette experts generally recommend tipping on the pre-tax subtotal, not the total after tax. However, tipping on the full amount including tax is also common and appreciated.

How to split a bill?

Divide the total bill (including tip) by the number of people. This calculator does that automatically. For unequal splitting, calculate each person's share of the subtotal, then add the same tip percentage to each share.
